UAE employers commonly expect details that Canadian, UK and US employers would rather not see, especially nationality and visa status. Practice varies by employer and by the application system, and most published guidance comes from recruiters and CV services rather than from official sources, so treat these as common conventions.
A convention, not an official rule
There is no single official CV format for the UAE. This page describes what employers commonly expect. Some public-sector and government applications, such as US federal jobs or EU institutions, do set a required format. If a job post gives one, follow it.
At a glance
| Length | One to two pages is typical. One page for under about five years of experience. Some guides allow three. |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Commonly listed, often right under your name, because it affects visa processing. |
| Visa status | State it plainly. Examples: resident (with the visa type), visiting the UAE (with the expiry date), or outside the UAE and available for sponsorship. |
| Date of birth and marital status | Date of birth is often included and marital status sometimes. Both are optional and less strict than they used to be. |
| Photo | Often included in the top right, but it varies. Keep a no-photo version for online application forms. |
| Also common | Current location, languages (Arabic is an advantage), driving licence status and notice period. |
What to include
- Header. Name, phone, email, current location and LinkedIn link.
- Personal details. Nationality, visa status, and optionally date of birth, languages and driving licence.
- Professional summary. Three to five lines: role, years of experience, key strengths.
- Work experience. Reverse chronological, with achievement bullets.
- Education and certifications. Degree, institution and year, plus relevant professional certificates.
- Availability. Notice period or the date you can start.
What to leave out
- A vague visa line. Recruiters filter on visa status, so be specific.
- Long paragraphs. Keep it to achievements and facts.
- A passport number or other ID numbers.
If your resume was written for India
- A lot carries over. Nationality, date of birth and, often, a photo are acceptable in the UAE.
- Add your visa status and notice period near the top, since recruiters look for them first.
- Delete the declaration paragraph and the generic career objective.
- Turn duties into achievements with numbers, and keep it to one or two pages.
- Keep a no-photo, single-column version for online application systems.
